Neighborhood overview

Oakland is the cultural and intellectual hub of Pittsburgh as home to three universities as well as several museums, galleries, and world class medical centers.

Oakland is divided into four neighborhoods: North, South, West, and Central Oakland each with their own distinct identity and neighborhood flavor. A majority of Oakland's residents are students living in close proximity to their university, but many others enjoy the easy access to the cultural center of the city.

Major Industries

The academic, medical, and cultural institutions that make this part of Pittsburgh so unique are the main employers in the area. The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Melon, Carlow University, The Carnegie Art and Natural History Museum, the Main Carnegie Library, and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center are some of the most noteworthy organizations in the area. There are also a range of businesses in the area that support those working in the pillars of Pittsburgh art, education, and medicine.

ACCESSIBILITY & Parking

The Oakland neighborhoods are served by the Pittsburgh bus system as well as 376 to the south. Several main roads run throughout the neighborhoods, with Forbes and Fifth Ave servicing West Oakland and Center Ave and North Craig St in North Oakland,

Many of the cultural institutions in the area have partnerships with nearby garages making parking quite easy when visiting many hospitals, museums, and universities.
